Welcome to 2018

Happy New Year to all! I wish everyone a fantastic, healthy, wealthy 2018.

FIT began as a crazy idea back in 2004. It morphed into a book in 2009, and then a revised version in 2015. This year I hope to finally upgrade the voice files. I have found a wonderful sound editor, so, here's to a few months of hard work and then some fresh sound files.

I wrote FIT as a way to help others find exciting new paths in this wild and crazy city that people from all over the world seem to gravitate to. This will be my 24th year in Tokyo -- a place I thought I would visit for three months. One event led to another, and here I am.

I will readily admit that I do not spend every waking day thinking about FIT and what to offer FIT users. But that is because there is already a wealth of information here on this site and in the book, all of which is still current and of value. Yes, things change, but in Japan, many, many things do not: salaries, jobs for foreigners, culture shocks -- the list goes on.

If you have come here to expand your horizons... then go for it. I still, to this day, meet fellow foreigners who strongly believe that they can only do one or two things in this country (i.e. teach their native language). People get comfortable and aren't willing to go for the gold ring. That's okay, too; but, honestly, Tokyo is a place where you can be anyone and where anything can happen. I started as a songwriter when I came here; now I'm an (award-winning) filmmaker and screenwriter. Who knew?

I will check in from time to time to let you know that I'm alive. I am still available for consultation. Don't hesitate to contact me. Sometimes it's just a matter of isolating what you're truly good at and figuring out the best way to put your talents to use in T-town.

Whether you're here for a short ride or the long haul, make it thrilling. Here's to a fantastic 2018!
